Feng Shui For Your Desk
by Debra Zimmer, CEO, SwankSpace
Feng Shui is the ancient Chinese art of placement. It's based on the concept of a universal life force energy that connects us with each other and our surroundings. Through basic Feng Shui principles you can manipulate that energy to create an environment that is (powerfully) harmonious --an environment as large as your home or as small as your office desktop.
Why do that? When you are in harmony with yourself and your surroundings, your energy state is pure and unblocked, turning you into a giant magnet able to attract the things you desire. Want to attract more money in your life? Want a promotion? Use Feng Shui to enhance your ability to get that raise. Can't we all use a little help?
How does it work? Let's look at it on a micro level, specifically looking at how to apply Feng Shui principles to your desktop. If you look at your desktop right now, how does it make you feel? Tired, tense, gloomy, depressed, or full of dread? Or do you feel calm, excited, invigorated, inspired? Is it "Wow, what a mess" or "How inviting; I can't wait to sit down"?
Most of us have messy desktops. When you so much as say the word "mess," you can pretty much feel the tension: a slight tightening of the chest, the blocking of energy, chaos. Scientifically, it might suggest the misalignment of atoms, a lack of polarity or lack of magnetism. On the other hand, the word "inviting" suggests attraction, a drawing towards, an alignment of atoms, magnetism. In which environment do you think you'd be more likely to attract the things you want?
To create a magnetic desk environment and change your energy from tired to inspired, you'll need to understand some basic Feng Shui principles, namely the Bagua Map, and apply some basic clean-up practices.
Step 1: Freeing the energy First, clear out the clutter. Clutter is the biggest obstacle to a positive energy flow. Clear off your desk, file items, place books on a shelf, return the dishes to the kitchen, and throw out the garbage. Create a clean slate, a free-flowing energy state. Think about two magnets overcoming distance and snapping together. This happens only if there's nothing between them. So remove the clutter and increase your magnetism.
Second, keep it clear and clutter free. Find holders for frequently used items. File consistently. Place a file holder on your desktop for work-in-progress. Commit to cleaning off your desktop daily or weekly at minimum. Can you think of a nicer way to start your day than to arrive each morning to a clean and inviting desk? Remember "inviting" equals "inspired" equals "attracting what you want!"
Step 2: Stabilizing the energy Print or copy the Bagua Map and lay it on your desk, placing the Career area at bottom center of your desk. Your chair will likely be in the Career area if you sit at desk center.
Now look at your desk with the Map overlaid on top. Each section of the Map and your desktop represents a different driving life desire. To help fulfill a desire-by maximizing energy flow and magnetism-organize items into the different sections of your desktop so that they match the desire and its Element. Specific examples follow.
Back Left The back left corner of your desk corresponds to the energy field that attracts wealth, prosperity and good luck. It is impacted by the element Wood. In this corner place items that represent wealth or Wood: Financial goals$1 million billSales forecastFull piggy bank (represents a goal reached)Landscape picture in a blue or green frameWood frameBlue pencil holder (is columnar and blue in color)Plant in a wicker planter
